Vibe: The employees create a warm, friendly and welcoming feel in the clean store; it’s hip but not in an intimidating or pretentious way. Price Range: Inexpensive-Moderate. The Look: Sporty and urban chic in an everyday, versatile kind of style. Comfy hoodies, T-shirts, tank tops, jeans and sweaters flatter figures and have reasonable prices. Owners: Husband-and-wife team Joe Lauer and Jena Frey opened Penelope’s in 2002. Vibe: The store is flooded with cheery, retro touches: look for sunny-sky-blue walls and colorful-as-a-box-of-crayons merchandise. Also check out home items and stationery like millimeter/milligram from South Korea. Price Range: Moderate-Expensive. The Look: Hipster with a sunny outlook. The space may be new, but it’s retained the retro, incense-drenched air (and those mushroom-cut mannequin heads scattered about). Staff is willfully quirky. Price Range: Moderate The Look: Fit for the aspiring Jane Birkin. Shopper’s Perks: Becker plans to hold fashionably fun events through the warm weather days.
